Size it right

How to Size an RV Carport

Three measurements decide your cover. Take them before you order, and use the owner’s manual as a cross-check.

01

Height

Measure to the highest point: AC unit, vents, antennas, ladders. Add at least 1′ for leg height, more if the ground slopes.

02

Length

Measure bumper to hitch or tongue. Add about 5′ so the roof covers both ends.

03

Width

12′ fits the coach. Go 18′ to 20′ for slide-outs, walking room or a second vehicle.

Gable ends

$225

Closes the top triangle of each end to stop wind-driven rain.

12-gauge framing

from $210

Heavier steel and extra strength for tall, long covers.

Full RV garage

Why a Steel RV Cover Beats a Tarp or Storage Lot

  • Sun: UV breaks down roof seals, decals and tires. Shade adds years to them.
  • Rain: a vertical roof keeps standing water off your RV roof and slide toppers.
  • Storms: each cover is engineered for the design wind speed at your address.
  • Cost: an installed cover often costs less than two to three years of covered storage fees.

Storage-fee comparison varies by area. Check local rates.

Before install day

  • Level ground within about 3 inches, or a concrete pad
  • About 3 feet of clear space on every side
  • No low branches or wires over the spot
  • A clear path for our truck and trailer
  • Buried utility lines marked (call 811)
  • HOA approval, if your community requires it

FAQ

RV Carport Questions, Answered

How much does an RV carport cost?

A 12′ × 36′ vertical-roof RV cover with 12′ legs starts at $4,235 installed. A 12′ × 41′ cover with 14′ legs for a Class A or fifth wheel starts at $5,295. Engineering, permit fees and sales tax are extra.

How tall should an RV carport be?

Measure your RV at its highest point, including the AC unit, vents and antennas, then add at least 1′. Most Class B and C motorhomes need 12′ legs. Most Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels need 14′ legs. We build up to 16′ on 12′ to 30′ widths.

How long should an RV carport be?

Plan about 5′ longer than your RV so the roof covers the bumpers and the hitch. A 41′ roof covers most RVs up to about 37′.

How wide should an RV carport be?

12′ covers the RV itself. Go 18′ to 20′ wide if you want room to open slide-outs, walk around, or park a car beside it.

Why do you recommend a vertical roof for RV covers?

Long, tall covers catch the most wind and rain. Vertical panels run top to bottom so water and debris slide straight off, and the vertical roof is required on most carports over 36′ long.

Can I enclose my RV carport later?

Yes. Side panels, gable ends and full enclosure can be added later, but planning them now usually costs less. A fully enclosed 18′ × 41′ RV garage with 14′ legs starts at $14,865.

Do I need a permit for an RV carport in Florida?

In most cities and counties, yes. We prepare sealed engineering for your address and file the permit for you.
